Swami Muktanand High School
Chembur
The Head Foundation comprises professionals from business and industry with diverse skill sets bound together by a shared vision of making a qualitative difference to Swami Muktanand School.
We are indeed privileged to be associated with Swami Muktanand School and we acknowledge and thank the trustees for inviting us to be a part of the process of transformation.
Methodology
Phase 1
Based on various discussions with the trustees, we felt it necessary to address the needs as articulated by the functional stake holders. The initial focus of the methodology was to spruce up the physical infrastructure of the school, while a more comprehensive plan for improving the qualitative aspects was later on designed and developed.
We felt that corrective / remedial steps need to be undertaken at the outset to demonstrate the commitment of the trustees to the transformation process and thereby build confidence and conviction amongst the various stake holders. An administrator was appointed on the rolls of the Head Foundation Trust for the duration of the transformation process, to ensure coordination with the school and to ensure smooth implementation and execution.
Some of the physical infrastructure improvements made are summarised below:
1. Clean Drinking Water: New water coolers were installed and maintenance taken up to clean and service the existing water coolers.
2. Clean Toilets: A new House Keeping agency was appointed to clean and ensure high hygiene levels in the toilets. On a rotation basis, some teachers and students were entrusted the responsibility to monitor the hygiene standards of the toilets being delivered by the new agency. This has ensured sustainability.
3. Cleaning School Premises: A comprehensive cleaning of the school premises was undertaken and based on the 5S workshop, all materials were stored in appropriately designated areas.
4. Signage: Bi-lingual signages were displayed in various parts of the school premises to ensure housekeeping / safety standards were understood and followed.
5. Pigeon proofing: The pigeon waste in the school premises was cleaned up and pigeon proof nets were installed to maintain clean, hygienic ambience.
6. Traffic Control: A speed breaker outside the school has significantly reduced the risk to children due to traffic movement
7. Learning Aids: Learning materials from NCERT were procured.
8. Drawing Class: A room was allocated to ensure students interested in drawing are tutored. The school participated in a drawing competition, as a first step.
9. Library: The books were properly indexed and referenced. A proper system for issuance and collection of books has been initiated. Students were actively encouraged to cultivate a reading habit.
Methodology
Phase 2
English Language Skills: As a proof-of-concept project to enhance English language skills and personality development, a weekly class was conducted by a trustee of Head Foundation for Class VII students.
Conducted over a year this program received excellent feedback from students and parents who were insistent that the intake be increased. This initiative now needs to be taken forward by the School authorities, extending it from Standard VII to Standard X in stages.
1. A stunning success of HEAD in close co-operation with the School Trustees and the Administration was the introduction of English medium for the first time from June, 2017, at the Play School and Jr. Kg. level.
2. Right from the initial conceptualisation of the need for English medium classes, based on a study of student induction and parental response, to studying the likely financial impact of not taking up the project, to actual hands-on efforts to implement the project, HEAD was totally committed.
3. It is a source of great satisfaction that the project which HEAD nurtured has taken root and got off to a flying start with the 2ndacademic year for the English medium section already in progress to excellent feed-back from all concerned.
